Request contract
A summary request should include an edition or document ID, input-rights profile, task type, length band, language, audience, and idempotency key. The service resolves the exact source version and rejects unsupported uses before processing.

}Document map and hierarchical synthesis
Map chapters, sections, page ranges, front matter, appendices, and omissions. Chunk on structural boundaries, preserve page references, and create bounded notes before final synthesis. The final stage can retrieve original evidence for central claims rather than trusting only intermediate summaries.
Response shape
Return a stable artifact ID, summary text, edition and input fingerprint, coverage, evidence references, warnings, model and prompt versions, generated time, evaluation state, and supersession information. Let clients request the approved current version or a historical version for reproducibility.
Copyright-aware controls
- Define allowed source classes and uses.
- Limit output length and chapter granularity by task.
- Reject requests for segmented reproduction or long verbatim passages.
- Detect excessive overlap as one signal, not a universal legal rule.
- Keep user-provided documents private and deletable with derivatives.
Quality rubric
Review factual consistency, coverage of central ideas, correct attribution, proportional emphasis, evidence support, useful compression, and unsupported detail. Automated checks can verify schema, citation IDs, quotation limits, entity consistency, and duplication, but human review remains necessary for representative samples.
Failure states
Use explicit states for invalid source, rights rejection, incomplete document, OCR quality below threshold, provider timeout, output-schema failure, evaluation failure, and human review required. A partial summary should carry coverage warnings rather than appearing complete.
